FARMINGTON – Celia Thompson Ames, 93, of New Sharon, died Aug. 18, at Orchard Park Nursing Home.

She was born in New Sharon Sept. 18, 1912, the daughter of C. Allen Thompson and Louise (Webster) Thompson. She graduated from New Sharon High School, Class of 1929, and Bates College, Class of 1933. She taught school in Frankfort, until her marriage to Donald C. Ames in November 1937.

She worked many years for her father at his tennis racket factory in New Sharon. She was a lifetime member of the New Sharon Congregational Church, where she sang in the choir and also was superintendent of the Sunday school for many years.

She was instrumental in directing and coordinating the community orchestra. She joined the New Sharon Grange No. 238 at the age of 14, where she was a member for more than 80 years. If she was not in church on a Sunday morning, she could be found fishing or camping with family and friends.

In the springtime, when her husband Donald was boiling maple sap, she could be found in the kitchen making yeast donuts to be dipped in the hot maple syrup for her family and neighbors.

Survivors include two sons, David and his wife, Helen and Robert and his wife, Sherry; one daughter, Marilyn Chandler and her husband, Adrian, all of New Sharon; one sister, Clara T. Fitz of New Sharon; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and was to be blessed with three more in the very near future; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald, in 1998 after 61 years of marriage.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Armand Auger and the entire staff of Orchard Park Living Center for the loving care given Celia during her stay with them.
