LEWISTON – Sister Jacqueline Lacasse, 80, member of the Ursuline Religious Community of the Northeast Province, died on Friday, Aug. 18, at d’Youville Pavilion, where she had been a patient for the last two years.
Born in Waterville on Jan. 21, 1926, she was the daughter of Lucien and Desneiges (Nadeau) Lacasse. She attended Catholic elementary schools in Waterville and Rochester, N.H., and graduated from Holy Rosary Secondary School in Rochester.
She entered the Ursuline Sisters’ Novitiate in Waterville in 1946. Following her postulancy, she spent two years at the Ursuline Novitiate in Beaugency, France, where she pronounced her first vows in 1949.
Upon returning to the United States, she attended the College of New Rochelle, N.Y., where she obtained a B.A degree with an English major in 1954.
Sister spent the following 13 years as a missionary in Brazil. Having received a licentiate in Portuguese, she taught in Ursuline schools in Resende and Rio, and held leadership positions both in Ursuline schools and religious communities.
Upon returning to the States, she later completed studies at the Weston School of Theology, from which she received an M.S degree in theology. Her teaching career in the United States included religion and English classes at Ursuline Academy in Dedham, Mass. Upon retiring from the classroom, she served as president of the school board of Ursuline Academy and used her proficiency in the Portuguese language for court translation in the Boston area whenever called upon.
Sister Jacqueline will be remembered for her total dedication to whatever duties she assumed during her long years of active ministry.
She is survived by a sister, Geraldine Lacasse, of Rochester N.H.; and three brothers, Jacques from Tilton, N.H., and Brother James, Brother of Christian Education, from Alfred, and Bertrand from Pittsburg, Calif.
She was predeceased by her parents; two sisters, Rolande Therrien and Doris Dumais; and two brothers, Henri Louis and Henri Paul.
The Ursuline Sisters wish to express their sincere gratitude to d’Youvillle Pavilion and Hospice caregivers who tended to Sister Jacqueline with much love and compassion during her stay at the Pavilion.
