GREENE – Filmmaker Frank Klicar will narrate his film, “Slovenia and Croatia – From the Alps to the Sea,” at the Sawyer Memorial, 371 Sawyer Road. Shows are at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, and at 2 and 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25.
The first part of the film will focus on Slovenia: Ljubljana – the national capital and its “triple bridge”; Maribor and Ptuj; Idrija – mercury mines and bobbin lace making; Lipica and the world famous Lipizzaner horses; Lake Bled and Triglav National Park; the Soca Valley and Boka Falls; the Battle of Caporetto, featured in a novel by Ernest Hemingway; Skocjan Caves and on Croatia: Roman ruins of the Istrian Peninsula; Zagreb, the capital; and Plitvica Lakes National Park.
After an intermission, the second part will feature Zadar’s Roman and Venetian relics; the annual grape harvest; Krka Falls National Park; the island of Vis and Croatian resorts; Pag island and its famous cheese; medieval Trogir and its fish market; the seaport of Split and the palace of Diocletian; Hvar island, its harbor; a Croatian cooking lesson; Korcula island, the birthplace of Marco Polo; Professor Lozica and his school for stone cutting; and walled Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic.
Klicar’s travels began when he was a youngster in the late 1940s. Since that time, he has visited more than 70 countries on six continents.
A native of Chicago, he received his bachelor of science degree in zoology from Roosevelt University. After attending graduate school, he served four years as a naval officer in Europe and the Far East, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He retired as a commander in the Naval Reserve after 22 years of service.
His first film, describing a journey down the Pan American Highway, was made in 1967. In more than 30 years on the travelogue circuit, he has produced more than a dozen full-length documentaries that he has presented to audiences throughout North America, including 10 appearances for the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C.
Klicar was elected to the Travelogue Hall of Fame in 1993. He is also a member of the Society of American Travel Writers. When not on the lecture circuit, he produces educational and corporate training videos.
His wife, Ann, a sales and marketing executive, is also a skilled photographer and occasionally participates in his travelogue productions.
Besides cross country skiing, Klicar’s favorite hobby is astronomy, which he pursues from his observatory at his home in Downers Grove, Ill., a suburb of Chicago.
