Free park day

AUGUSTA – Maine residents will be admitted free to all Maine state parks and historic sites on Saturday Aug. 26.

“Maine Residents Day” is an annual event for the Maine Department of Conservation and the Bureau of Parks and Lands. “It’s our way of saying ‘thank-you’ to Maine’s citizens for their continued support of our state parks,” said Patrick K. McGowan, commissioner.

Maine’s 47 state parks and historic sites are spread across the state, from West Quoddy Head to the New Hampshire border in Grafton Notch.

Fort program

AUGUSTA – Youth Opportunities, a new program introduced by Old Fort Western this summer, is available to young people between 12 and 18 all year long.

The program gives the young people a chance to pursue a humanities project, on a schedule they determine, under the guidance of members of the staff at the fort.

Participants this summer interpreted at the fort, did research and wrote papers for publication on the fort’s Web site or worked with a blacksmith.

Individuals and small groups may enroll. Projects may be of short or long duration. Program fees are determined on a project-by-project basis. Call Old Fort Western at 626-2385 for more information or to enroll.

Mediators sought

Volunteers will mediate consumer complaints over the phone or by mail in the Attorney General’s Augusta office. The Attorney General trains its mediators in consumer law and mediation techniques.

Mediators are asked to volunteer approximately six hours a week on a schedule convenient to them. During the past year, the Consumer Mediation Service recovered over $587,308 for Maine consumers. If interested in volunteering, go to www.maine.gov/ag/ or contact Assistant Attorney General James A. McKenna at 626-8842 or [email protected].
