STORRS, Conn. – Natalie Berry’s goal early in the second half stood up as the game-winner as the University of Maine women’s soccer team opened the season with a 2-1 victory over Fairfield.

Berry notched the unassisted goal on one touch from 20 yards out to make it 2-0 for the Black Bears. Christine Labelle scored in the first half for Maine, and Jasmine Phillips turned aside five scoring chances in the Black Bear net.

Casey Frobey scored at 74:02 for Fairfield, knocking in the rebound of an Ahna Johnson shot after Phillips made a sprawling save.

Men’s soccer
Massachusetts 2, Maine 0

AMHERST – Greg Cirillo assisted on both Minutemen goals as the University of Massachusetts men’s soccer team handed Maine a 2-0 loss Friday in the season-opener for both clubs.

Cirillo got his foot on the deflection of a Prince Ofosu shot and moved it over to Tony Bassett, who fired the ball home from five yards out for the opening goal. Cirillo also set up Ofosu on his first career goal 14 minutes later.

The Black Bears recorded one shot in the first half and finished with five. Maine goaltender Giacomo Brunino stopped three shots.
