I wholeheartedly agree with the letter of Aug. 24 written by Ike Levine regarding the purchase of a $500,000 big-city firetruck for the town of Poland, which we can ill afford at this time, especially with the $2.7 million payback to Poland Spring Bottling.

Sure, mistakes were made. We should all be in support of our town manager and those trying to correct this “error” instead of all the name-calling that has been going on at the selectmen’s meetings that could put the agreement with Poland Spring Bottling in jeopardy.

What if the bottling company decided to call off the agreement because of the town’s name being dragged through the mud, thereby including the bottling company and force a full immediate payment of the $2.7 million?

Audit after audit has been done on the town’s and rescue department’s books and nothing has surfaced that could be shown as any misappropiation of funds. Those who insist on keeping these audits going and the recall of the last selectmen’s election are wasting time and taxpayers’ money and only serve those looking for name recognition and publicity at our (the town’s) expense.

Ted Ireland, Poland Spring
