LINCOLN, N.H. (AP) – Authorities have identified a body found last week at an abandoned campsite in the White Mountain National Forest as that of a Derry man who disappeared while hiking last September.

The Chief Medical Examiner’s office said Monday the skeletal remains have been identified as those of Brian Smith, 48. The cause and manner of death have not been determined.

Officials said the remains were discovered by a search dog after a park ranger noticed the campsite in a remote area off the Cedar Brook Trail, about 6 miles from Route 112. They did not suspect foul play.

Officials said Smith was last seen by family members in Abington, Mass., on Sept. 1.
