HARRISON – A Harrison man was arrested on a drug charge Tuesday in connection with an overdose that claimed the life of a Bridgton hospital worker in November.
John Hewitt, 33, of Cape Monday Road, was arrested at his home shortly after he was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of furnishing heroin.
Hewitt was released on $1,000 bail Tuesday afternoon, according to an officer at the Cumberland County Jail.
Hewitt is accused of providing heroin to 29-year-old Nancy Allen at a party the two attended Nov. 26, 2005, at Vacationland Road Apartments in Harrison.
Allen, who worked with children at the Bridge Crossing Program in Bridgton, passed out on a couch at the apartment and died on the way to the hospital, police said.
The Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled that Allen died from acute morphine and alcohol poisoning.
Cumberland County sheriff’s officers have been investigating the case for nearly a year. This week, they presented their findings to a grand jury, which handed up an indictment Tuesday charging Hewitt with trafficking in scheduled drugs.
