Volunteers needed

AUGUSTA – A volunteer opportunity at the Pine Tree State Arboretum includes working with children in the outdoors and those interested are invited to attend a training from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Sept. 12.

After an introduction to the arboretum’s education program, Lisa St. Hilaire, botanist with the Maine Natural Areas Program, will lead a “Fall Berries, Blossoms and Seeds” walk, which will provide background for the seed dispersal, tree ID and general tour programs. Refreshments will be provided.

Seeking volunteers

AUGUSTA – Old Fort Western, the 1754 National Landmark fort, store and house historic site on the riverfront in downtown Augusta, is seeking volunteers to help with a variety of office tasks ranging from telephone reception, filing, photocopying, and simple data entry to collections management, Web site maintenance and basic historical research.

Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Individual volunteer days and hours are negotiable. The fort’s office is located in city hall. Call 626-2385 to learn more.

Corvette winner

TOPSHAM – The American Cancer Society raffled a new 2006 Corvette, with a retail value of more than $50,000, on Aug. 26 at Strong Chevrolet in Damariscotta.

The winner was James A. Rogers of Wells. Sandra Simmonds of Yarmouth won $1,000 cash as second prize, and the third prize of $500 cash went to Emma Mitchell of Bass Harbor.
