BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) – A fashion designer whose dresses have been featured at New York shows and whose evening gown was worn by Miss Universe 2005 was shot and killed Monday by drive-by assassins on a motorcycle.
Miguel de la Torre was killed outside his workshop in a middle-class neighborhood of the capital.
Authorities were trying to determine a motive for de la Torre’s killing, said Col. Rafael Sabogal, a spokesman for Bogota’s police department.
Canada’s Natalie Glebova wore dresses by the 35-year-old designer when she was crowned Miss Universe last year in Thailand, giving de la Torre a rare opportunity to showcase his work alongside that of some of the world’s top designers.
Aspiring beauty queens from Nicaragua and Uruguay also were among his clients.
