Grange meeting

NEW GLOUCESTER – Members of Androscoggin Pomona Grange will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Sabbathday Lake Grange for a 6:30 p.m. supper. Guests will be members of Lincoln Pomona Grange. They will fill the chairs at the 7:30 meeting. A program will be presented and an attendance drawing will be held. All members and guests are welcome.

Kennel club

AUBURN – The Lewiston-Auburn Kennel Club will meet at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at the Auburn Police Department Community Room. Area residents who own or are interested in purebred dogs are invited.

New members are being sought. The club is nonprofit and is a member of the American Kennel Club.

Program on plants

WAYNE – Kennebec Land Trust will hold a program from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, on identification and control of invasive plants in the field.

Jane Davis, trust steward and member of the Wayne Conservation Commission will show how to identify and control common invasive plants in central Maine. Participants will visit the Wayne Conservation Commission invasive plant control demonstration site in North Wayne.

Those interested should meet at the gate to the Readfield Town Forest/Macdonald Conservation Area on the Belz Road.

Author to speak

AUBURN – Auburn-Lewiston Art and Literature Club will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at the Woman’s Literary Union.

Speaker will be Katy Perry of Hallowell, who will review books by Irish writers. Perry is the author of several books highlighting people and places that have been part of her life and three children’s books. She writes a column for the Capital Weekly.

Hostess for the meeting will be Betty Crowley, assisted by Mary Provencher, Mary Riley and Helen Archambault.

Line dancing

AUBURN – Temple Shalom will again offer a line dancing program for adults who have no previous dance experience or the dance pros. Beginner/intermediate level line dancing will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 12, from 10 to 11:15 a.m. It is an ongoing class and the cost is $4 each class. The class will be instructed by Marjorie Perkins of Brunswick.

No partner is needed, and the program is open to the public. To register or for more information, call the temple office at 786-4201. Temple Shalom is a nonprofit organization located at 74 Bradman St.

Cemetery cleanup

GREENE – The Valley Cemetery Association is requesting that all spring and summer arrangements, baskets or anything that people do not want to be discarded be removed by Saturday, Sept. 16, prior to fall cleanup. This is earlier then past years. For more information, call Sandy Bates at 946-7067.

Dealing with abuse

LEWISTON – “Responding to Child Abuse” will offer an opportunity to learn more about child abuse and neglect issues from professionals presenting on topics in their fields of expertise.

The course, sponsored by Advocates for Children, is 45 hours, providing 4.5 Continuing Education Units for teachers and professionals.

It will help participants examine how dealing with the issues affects them personally and professionally. Topics will include the effects of domestic abuse, dynamics of abusive families, medical perspectives, the legal system, working with juvenile offenders, the role of law enforcement, prevention efforts and responding to online child exploitation.

The course will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 26 through Dec. 12. The cost is $195. To register, call Advocates for Children at 783-3990.

Band show on tap

LEWISTON – The Lewiston High School Music Boosters and the Edward Little Music Association are planning for the 16th annual Twin Cities Marching Band Show at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23.

A collaborative event held at Lewiston High School, the show will feature marching bands from many high schools in central and southern Maine. The show is a family event with percussion groups and color guard ensembles performing.

Volunteers are needed to help between 5 and 9 p.m. during the show, selling tickets and programs, helping in the concession stand and moving band equipment. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact Sharon Handy at 784-5595 or [email protected].

Fortier Chapter

LEWISTON – The Dr. Paul Fortier Chapter 52, Association Canado-Americaine, will gather at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, in the Senior Citizens Room of the Multi-Purpose Center.

The agenda will include a report by chapter delegates who attended the ACA convention in Sherbrooke, Quebec, last month. Following the meeting, there will be a presentation by Brother Irenee Richard, executive director of St. Martin de Porres Residence for homeless men and women.
