AUBURN – A pair of motorcyclists on their way to the first day of school Tuesday were arrested after police said the duo led them on a chase through Auburn.

Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Sgt. James Jacques said the two teens were caught after they became confused at an intersection and crashed their bikes together at low speed.

Arrested were Shaun D. Hunt, 18, of Albany Township, and Daniel R. Zicarelli, 18, of Bethel. They were each charged with eluding police and driving at criminal speed.

Police said both men were on their way to the first day of class at Central Maine Community College in Auburn when the chase began.

“They never made it to class,” Jacques said.

At about 10:30 a.m., the sergeant was sitting in his cruiser running radar on Jackson Hill Road in Minot near the Auburn town line. He said the two teens on Kawasakis drove past him at more than 70 mph in a 40-mph zone.

Jacques and other sheriff’s officials began to follow the bikers as they made their way to Youngs Corner Road, across Hotel Road and to Summer Street in Auburn. Police said the men were passing cars as they sped away from police and that they ran at least two stop signs.

The pursuit continued down Summer Street and toward the busy section of Auburn, Jacques said. But at Summer Street and Union Street Bypass, the bikers appeared confused about which way to go.

“They got confused at the intersection and one of the motorcycles bumped into the other one at low speed,” Jacques said. “It gave us enough time to get around them and box them in.”

Nobody was hurt in the chase. Jacques said the pursuit covered 4 miles and lasted approximately five minutes.
