RUMFORD – Middle school and high school teachers, Envirothon coaches and community leaders are invited to attend a two-part Maine Project Learning Tree Forests of Maine workshop featuring entertainment by the NewPage Pulp and Paperworkers with their “Stump Um” game show.

Three trained Project Learning Tree facilitators will introduce two high school curriculum guides that cover all areas of the curriculum and are aligned with the Maine Learning Results. The workshop will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on two Thursdays, Oct. 12 and 19, at Local 900 Union Hall, Route 108.

Project Learning Tree is an internationally recognized environmental education program. Through hands-on, interdisciplinary activities, it provides students in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 12 with opportunities to investigate environmental issues and encourages them to make informed decisions. The project is an education program of the Maine Tree Foundation.

The curriculum materials for the workshop will focus on the ecology, resources and economics of the Maine forests. The NewPage paperworkers produced a game show that provides forest facts. The Oct. 19 dinner show will feature their talent.

The workshop also introduces the new curriculum guide, “Exploring the Places We Live,” which provides opportunities for community investigations focused on environmental, social and economic issues, and helps students and other community members develop and strengthen their sense of place.

For more information or to register, call or e-mail Pat Maloney, 626-7990 or [email protected]. Cost of the workshop is $25, which includes the “Places We Live” guide, forest ecology guide and other handouts plus dinner on Oct. 19.
