NEW YORK (AP) – With a cherubic face and a shock of dark hair, Suri Cruise – subject of the world’s most anticipated baby photo – made her debut Wednesday on the cover of Vanity Fair.
The magazine’s 22-page spread of 4½-month-old Suri and her famous parents, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, includes photos taken by Annie Leibovitz for the October issue, on newsstands in New York and Los Angeles and nationwide on Sept. 12.
The cover photo shows Suri peeking out of a jacket worn by Cruise with Holmes looking on. Katie Couric, in her first night as anchor of the “CBS Evening News,” revealed the photo Tuesday.
Born April 18, Suri had not previously appeared in any published photos, prompting some public speculation about her very existence.
“She has Kate’s lips and eyes,” the 44-year-old Cruise is quoted as telling the magazine. Counters Holmes: “I think she has Tom’s eyes. I think she looks like Tom.”
Leading up to the frenzy over the photos, “We were just living our lives, being a family,” Cruise says. “Actually, we were taking our own photos and always planned to release those at the right time.”
But “then all the craziness began,” Holmes, 27, says. “This “where is Suri?’ controversy. Tom and I looked at each other and said, “What’s going on?’ We weren’t trying to hide anything.”
Holmes also explains their purchase of a sonogram machine, saying she and Cruise were followed by paparazzi and as a result, her doctor had to make house calls.
“The sonogram was for his use!” she says.
Holmes says of her daughter: “She’s a glorious girl. She’s the miracle of our life.”
NEW YORK (AP) – Lisa Marie Presley, Debbie Harry, Eve and Dita Von Teese are the newest crop of unlikely makeup models in MAC Cosmetics’ Viva Glam ad campaign.
It’s not just the spokesmodels who are unusual, it’s also the product they promote: 100 percent of the sales of Viva Glam lipsticks and lip glosses are donated to HIV and AIDS programs, including treatment, education and daily necessities.
Presley said she agreed to participate in the campaign because of its fundraising efforts.
“MAC is actually, honestly, really true blue about its charity,” the 38-year-old singer – and daughter of Elvis Presley – told The Associated Press in a recent phone interview.
“You can see it making headway. They’ve raised $70 million that’s been used incredibly well. It’s not a campaign full of fluff, and I’m not a fluff person.”
Presley said she’s known Harry for several years and has crossed paths with Von Teese, but hadn’t met Eve until the photo shoot a few weeks ago.
Even though she doesn’t consider herself to be either a beauty expert or a model, she tried to put her best face on for the campaign, Presley said, because of the cause and the interesting and admirable group of women she was working with.
“I think we’re all reaching out in a different direction – whoever can reach a certain segment of the audience,” she said.
So, who’s her audience?
“That’s a complex question. Based on my fan base, it’s 80 percent gay, young girls, bikers, women my age and then some occasional Elvis fans. It’s an eclectic potpourri,” she said with a laugh. “If I go to a signing or show, it’s a rainbow.”
Previous spokesmodels for the ad campaign, which debuted 12 years ago, include Christina Aguilera, Missy Elliott, Pamela Anderson and Boy George.
John Demsey, global president of MAC and chairman of the MAC AIDS Fund, said this year’s models were chosen for their personal commitment to the fight against AIDS.
“We want to rattle some cages. We want to grab people’s attention and not let them turn away. And most importantly, we want to reach even more people. Our Viva Glam VI spokespeople cut through the clutter. They are all incredibly talented and have strong and distinct points of view and unique perspectives on this crisis,” he said in a statement.
NEW YORK (AP) – Sharon Stone, who’s spent time on both “best dressed” and “worst dressed” lists thanks to her risk-taking style, will wear high-glamour gowns in an ad campaign for Badgley Mischka.
“Our collection represents Hollywood glamour with a modern twist and Sharon epitomizes this look. We have dressed Sharon many times and working with her on this campaign and combining our visions was an incredible experience,” the design duo of Mark Badgley and James Mischka said Wednesday in a statement.
Print ads featuring Stone will appear in the October issues of Vogue, Elle and InStyle, among other magazines. They follow last season’s campaign featuring actresses Ashley Olsen and her twin sister, Mary-Kate.
Gilles Bensimon photographed the 48-year-old actress at the former estate of philanthropist Dorothy Chandler in Hancock Park in Los Angeles.
“I’ve known Mark and James for many years ever since they brought their gorgeous gowns to my house and spread them over my living room,” Stone said in a statement. “Since then, I’ve always thought of wearing their dress like going to a great party – they’re fun, elegant and intricately detailed.”
Stone, who starred in “Casino” and the “Basic Instinct” movies, has a role in the Emilio Estevez-directed “Bobby,” slated for release Nov. 17.
In 1992, Stone and her sister, Kelly, created Planet Hope, an organization that provides medical care and counseling to homeless and abused children and their families. Badgley Mischka has donated $100,000 to Planet Hope, according to a spokeswoman for the ad campaign.
NEW YORK (AP) – From Velma to Roxie.
Bebe Neuwirth, who originated the role of Velma Kelly in the Broadway revival of “Chicago” – and won a Tony Award for her performance – is now switching murderesses.
The actress will portray Roxie Hart in the long-running production at the Ambassador Theatre beginning New Year’s Eve. She will appear in the show through March 25.
Neuwirth, 47, co-starred with Ann Reinking in the Bob Fosse-Kander and Ebb musical when it was first revived on Broadway in November 1996. As a dancer, she has appeared on Broadway in productions of “Damn Yankees” and “Sweet Charity,” for which she won her first Tony.
Television viewers know her as Dr. Lilith Sternin on the NBC comedy “Cheers.” She also played an assistant district atttorney on “Law & Order: Trial by Jury.”
Neuwirth and Reinking will reunite Nov. 14 for a gala 10th-anniversary performance of “Chicago,” which will include other original revival cast members as well as performers who have appeared in the Broadway production over the years. It will be a benefit for Safe Horizon, a national victim-assistance organization.
The original production of “Chicago,” which starred Gwen Verdon as Roxie and Chita Rivera as Velma, had a two-year run on Broadway in the mid-1970s.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Kevin Costner, Ashton Kutcher and Sela Ward were among the stars expected to attend the premiere of “The Guardian” at the Uptown Theater on Thursday.
“The Uptown Theater is a true historic gem in the Cleveland Park neighborhood, and we are glad for the opportunity to showcase it to the world this Thursday,” D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams said in a statement.
The Walt Disney Co., which owns Touchstone Pictures, is spending about $1 million to produce “this star-studded event,” the city said. Director Andrew Davis and actors Neal McDonough, Clancy Brown and Peter Gail were also expected to attend.
Costner, 51, stars as a veteran Coast Guard swimmer who is dispatched to Kodiak, Alaska, to teach after his crew is lost in a crash. Kutcher, 28, plays a rookie.
“The Guardian” is slated for release Sept. 29.
Proceeds from Thursday’s event will go to the U.S. Coast Guard Foundation, a nonprofit group that supports members of the Coast Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
