FARMINGTON – Lybrand C. Goldsmith, 91, of Wilton, died Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Sandy River Center for Rehabilitation.

He was born, July 5, 1915, in Temple, a son of Arthur and Harriett (Cony) Goldsmith. He attended Temple and Farmington schools, graduating in 1934.

He served with the 496th Air Service Squadron with the Army Air Corp during World War II. A master sergeant, he served tours in North Africa and Italy.

He was the superintendent of the Wilton Water Co. for 25 years before transferring to the Camden-Rockland Water Co., where he also served as the superintendent of operations. He retired in 1980, and moved back to Wilton in 1996.

He was a former member of the Wilton Fire Department, which he served as fire chief for eight years, the Wilton Congregational Church and the Thomaston Baptist Church. He was also active in Little League baseball and the Cub and Boy Scouts. He enjoyed horses and served as a blacksmith to townspeople. He also loved to work in his workshop, where he made lamps, canes, clocks and many pieces of furniture.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel of Wilton; son, Gordon and his wife, Billie, of Wilton; a foster daughter, Jane Lynch of Shawmut; brothers, Burchard Ranger of Falmouth and Lloyd Ranger and his wife, Joan, of Falmouth; two sisters, Betty Goldsmith of Bucksport and Maxine Voter and her husband, Vernon, of Strong; two grandchildren, Kenneth Lynch and his fiance, Beth Drumm, of Rochester, N.Y. and Danielle Goldsmith of Wilton; a great-granddaughter, Casey Lynch of Rochester, N.Y.

He was predeceased by a sister, Rita Willins; two brothers, Robert “Bobby” Goldsmith and Herbert Ranger Jr.
