• As at previous elections, The Sun led in giving the public the most accurate bulletins at the earliest time. Within a few minutes after the polls had closed in Auburn until nearly time to go to press, information regarding the election, not only local but from all over the state, was given out.
• An unusually large vote and tremendous Democratic gains in all districts in the State, marked yesterday’s election. It was one of the hardest fought contest in years and was watched with interest throughout the country – all eyes were on Maine yesterday.

Maine Democrats re-elected Gov. Edmund S. Muskie today and captured one of the state’s three House seats in Washington.
Democratic State Chairman Frank M. Coffin, 37, edged state Sen. James L. Reid (R) for the second district seat Rep. Charles P. Nelson (R) is vacating.
Boyish-looking Gov. Edmund S. Muskie, 42, trounced GOP House Speaker Willis A. Trafton to become the first governor of his party to be re-elected in a presidential year – at least since the Civil War.
25 Years Ago, 1981
• National Grandparents Day will be celebrated Sunday, the fourth such observance since proclamation of this special occasion in 1978. It’s purpose: “to foster respect and honor,” among those for whom the day is named.
• The Greek Festival planned for Saturday and Sunday and sponsored by the parishioners of Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at Hogan Road in Lewiston is planned as a family affair.
This fourth annual festival will feature, for the first time, a special tent with activities geared to keep the youngsters occupied. There will be supervised games and prizes as well as other features.
A Greek restaurant will serve traditional Greek specialties including baklava, Moussaka, Greek salads, spinach pie, rolled grape leaves, Greek meatballs, Greek olives and Feta cheese.
