This is response to the Sun Journal editorial, “Town roads wrong place for ATV riders,” (Sept. 5). Peru selectmen should be praised for their decision to let ATV riders have access to other area trails.
The Sun Journal should be reminded that most ATV riders in Peru are taxpaying citizens. If the Sun Journal knew anything about downtown Peru, it would realize there is no back-forty to traverse. Small lots with lawns and gardens, a school yard and a cemetery would have to be crossed.
I also take exception to the way the Sun Journal portrays ATV riders – as if they are all irresponsible speeders, tearing up people’s properties. ATVs do not damage tar roads. They ride on low pressure tires and weigh a fraction of what a car or truck does. I believe if Cornell University had done a study on America’s highways, teens, speed and alcohol would also be the No. 1 cause of most deaths.
There are many Maine towns that allow ATVs on public roads and do not have a police department. Peru is not the first.
If anything, the state of Maine should invest in more places for ATVs to ride – it would help boost the economy in this state. Quebec and New Brunswick are capitalizing on our lackluster trail system.
Sun Journal editorials seem to be against all forms of motorsports. The bias is apparent once again.
