YMCA making an effort to get community moving
AUBURN – The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA will celebrate America on the Move Week from Sept. 25 to 29 with a week-long open house at its facility on Turner Street.
The YMCA will open its doors all week for free use in the following areas: all group exercise classes, designated swim times, open gym and other planned activities. The YMCA will also provide tours of the facility and refreshments during the day. There will also be special events for children and teens throughout the week.
A major focus of the week will be getting members and visitors to take an additional 2,000 steps a day, the focus of America on the Move Week. The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA is one of more than 800 YMCAs nationwide encouraging members of their community to take “small steps” to promote active living and healthy eating.
Research has proven that Americans can help maintain a healthy weight by cutting 100 calories and taking 2,000 extra steps each day. Small lifestyle changes can have a big impact on the overall health of a community.
The YMCA encourages all local businesses to contact the YMCA to find out how they can get their employees involved in the week-long event and see how many extra steps they can take. Contact Doug McFarland at the YMCA or e-mail him at [email protected] to find out more.
Additional information will become available as the YMCA staff and volunteers complete their plans for the week. For more information about the event or any of the YMCAs programs, stop by 62 Turner St., call 795-4095 or visit www.alymca.com.
