AUBURN – Alfred G. Bernier, 81, formerly of 17 Googin St., Lewiston, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Clover Manor Nursing Home.

He was born in Winthrop on June 16, 1925, the son of Rodolphe and Georgia Harding Bernier. Educated in Lewiston – Auburn schools, he graduated from Edward Little High School in 1946 and later attended Bliss College in Lewiston.

A veteran of World War II, he joined the Navy in 1942 and saw action in North Africa and Sicily. Discharged in 1945, he continued to serve in the Navy Reserves during the Korean Conflict.

On June 28, 1947, he was married to the former Maureen T. Kavanaugh, who passed away on July 6, 1995. He was employed as a shoe salesman for Myer Canter Footwear in Lewiston, as an insurance agent for the Boston Mutual Co., and for many years owned and operated the United Hearing Aid Service.

A member of St. Patrick’s Parish, he served as a eucharistic minister, belonged to the St. Patrick’s Church Men’s Club, and was a scoutmaster for the church’s scout troop. He also served on the Maine State Hairdressers Licensing Board.

Survivors include three sons, David and wife, Karen, of Lewiston, Thomas and wife, Diane, of Lewiston and Peter and wife, Linda, of Poland; a daughter, Patti and husband, Jean Pratte, of Monmouth; seven grandchildren, Julie, Rebecca, John, Jeff, Elizabeth, Alex and Libby; a great-grandchild, Minna; and a niece, Pauline Blackwell of Easley, S.C.

Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Lester Bernier in 1978; a half-sister, Eva Rousseau; and a half-brother, Frank E. Smart.
