I was thrilled to learn recently that the new owner of “The Gingerbread House” (also known as the Evans House) on Main Street in Norway has taken steps to evaluate the house’s structural condition and has found it to be basically sound.

The Lewiston Daily Sun is that new owner.

I have been coming to Norway every summer for decades. The first thing I always did each summer with my parents, and now do with my children, is to slow down in front of that house to see how it fared over the winter. I have admired, and grown to love, that house for its beauty and for its sheer tenacity.

About 10 years ago, I asked the house’s previous owner what his plans were for the building. I was told that repairs would cost too much and so it was going to be left to deteriorate. I was crushed at the potential loss to the community and, of course, relieved each summer to see it still standing and looking remarkably as it had the summer before.

I am so grateful that the current owner is taking constructive measures to preserve this architectural jewel. There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of people who, like me, silently monitor the status of the house and hope for its preservation. I wanted to let the Lewiston Sun Journal to know that its efforts are engendering much good will.
