GREENE – Barbara H. Lawrence, 76, of Greene, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice with her loving family by her side.
She was born Jan. 24, 1930, in St. Albans, Vt., the daughter of George and Isobel (Greenfield) Hunter. She graduated from Waltham, Mass. high school, earned her registered nursing degree at Deaconess Hospital, Mass., and her bachelor’s degree at the University of New Mexico.
While at Deaconess, she met and married the love of her life, Arthur F. Lawrence. They shared many happy years together, living in Albuquerque, N.M., Jenkintown, Pa., Orchard Lake, Mich. and returning to their New England roots to make their home in Greene. Together, they raised their two daughters, Sue and Martha, sharing their love of the outdoors through hiking, sailing, skiing and gardening.
She served as a school nurse for Abington, Pa., school district, and was a field nurse for the Oakland County, Mich., public health district. She was dedicated to helping families, and especially loved working with children, infants and their mothers.
While in Michigan, Art gave Barbara her first loom, which was the start of nearly 30 years of weaving and spinning her own designs. These included finely crafted linen table settings, colorful wall hangings, handsome rugs and more. She also applied her fiber-art skills in embroidery, knitting and doll-making. She enjoyed warm friendships with women in Maine spinners, sharing her knowledge by teaching the craft to beginners.
An avid reader, she would often be seen relaxing with a good book. She instilled her love for reading in her daughters, and spent many happy times reading books to her grandchildren. She belonged to a book club, and enjoyed discussions on contemporary topics with family and friends.
After settling in Greene, she planted and nurtured many beautiful gardens. She enjoyed nature’s splendor, seeing evidence of God’s wondrous works in birds, flowers and landscapes. She loved to travel with Art and visit gardens, art museums and historic sites.
She was a member of the West Auburn Congregational Church, and participated in activities and events for the community there. She loved celebrating the holidays with family, directing cooking in the kitchen and cherishing moments with her husband, children and grandchildren.
She was very proud of her grandchildren, and loved them, along with her friends with all of her heart.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur F. Lawrence; daughter, Sue Ann Lawrence and son-in-law, Larry Morris, of Athens, Ga., daughter, Martha M. Lawrence and son-in-law, Bob L. McArthur, of Auburn; four grandchildren, Arthur E. Morris and Laura Morris of Atlanta, Ga. and Andrew Kary and Julie McArthur of Auburn.
The family would like to express our gratitude for the wonderful care provided by friends, spinners, church members, and the Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice team.
