CAPE ELIZABETH (AP) – Remnants of Hurricane Florence kicked up powerful ocean swells and created havoc Wednesday for commercial fishermen along Maine’s coast, overturning at least two lobster vessels and triggering a search for a missing lobsterman.

The 36-foot April Lee overturned in Seal Cove off Cape Elizabeth, Coast Guard Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Dan Sharp said. The Coast Guard received a distress call shortly after noon.

Three people were aboard, and two who were able to swim away from the wreck in 59-degree water were helped ashore by people who had been sitting in a local cafe. The Coast Guard said all three are from Hollis, but their names were not immediately released.

A Coast Guard helicopter and boat and state police plane were searching for the third person Wednesday, Sharp said. After the overturned boat washed ashore, its hull was cut open so searchers could see if the missing man was trapped underneath, but he was not seen. Boats from the Maine Marine Patrol and area fire departments searched into the evening along the shoreline, Sharp said.

In a separate incident Wednesday, a lobsterman was rescued after being tossed overboard when his 18-foot boat capsized off Zeb’s Cove in Cape Elizabeth. The lobsterman, whose name was not available, was hauling traps when the boat overturned.

A rescue team from Cape Elizabeth worked about a half an hour to bring the man to safety. He was able to walk to an ambulance, which took him to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Seas were hazardous as Hurricane Florence’s remnants brought high winds and heavy rain to seas off the New England and Canadian coast, prompting the National Weather Service to post a small craft advisory.

The storm’s leftovers also brought wind gusts of more than 100 mph and bands of rain to southern and southeastern Newfoundland, the Canadian Hurricane Center said.
