CAMDEN (AP) – Police reported the second death of a kayaker this week in Maine.

Paul Thorndike drowned when the kayak he was paddling on his 77th birthday overturned Wednesday on Megunticook Lake in Camden, police said. Thorndike, who was not wearing a life jacket, was found within 20 minutes, but it was too late, police said.

Earlier this week, a New Jersey resident died while kayaking off the coast of Deer Isle on Monday night. Susan Wakelin, 60, was wearing a life jacket when her body was recovered hours later.

Seas were hazardous as Hurricane Florence’s remnants brought high winds and heavy rain to seas off the New England and Canadian coast. Two lobster boats overturned Wednesday off Cape Elizabeth, and one of the three fishermen was missing and presumed drowned.
