FARMINGTON – Police have been investigating rumors since the middle of last week about supposed gang activity at the Farmington Fair this week.

“As far as we can determine there is nothing credible and there is not going to be anything going on at the fairgrounds,” police Chief Richard Caton III said Monday. “That’s not to say that is 100 percent.”

Based on interviews with juveniles, their parents and some adults who may have gang ties, he said it doesn’t look like anything is going to happen.

Police gained some information, he said, that has been blown out of proportion by the rumor mill and the rumors have become rampant.

“There are some loose groups of individuals that are calling themselves a gang,” Caton said.

Farmington police have contacted other police agencies about the situation, he said.

If anyone knows anything about people belonging to gangs, he said, they should contact Farmington police at 778-6311 or any other police agency.

“We’re just trying to relax some of the rumors going on,” Caton said.

Parents have to make the decision on whether to keep their children home from the fair or to send their children to the fair alone, he said.

If parents see their children wearing funny colors or certain clothes, ask them why they’re wearing them and question them about involvement with gangs, Caton said.

And if they find something out, he said, they should call police.
