FARMINGTON – From cows to apples and groundwater to fish, children had a chance to learn about agriculture and other topics including forest fire and first aid Monday during the annual Agricultural/Educational Day at Farmington Fair.

School children like Emma Haywood, a student at Mallett School in Farmington, waited in line to milk a cow under the guidance of farmer Henry Hardy.

William Gunter and Abigail Wallace, students at Academy Hill School in Wilton, fed a milking cow some hay.

Adult Joy Phillips of East Dixfield trimmed some hair from Joker, a Guernsey cow, at a station a short distance away.

“I come every year,” Phillips said.

She is the daughter of farmers Judy and Les Smith of East Dixfield and comes to help her family with the animals.

It was a sunny morning as was Sunday, opening day of the fair, when fairgoers enjoyed the outdoor weather and events.

“We had a nice day (Sunday). Attendance was good, no major problems,” said John Stansfield of Wilton, treasurer of the Franklin County Agricultural Society.

“I’m very happy so far,” he said. “I thought we had more people than a year ago. The weather favored us.”

He’s hoping the weather keeps up, he said, but it looks like rain Tuesday.
