WILTON – A local dog owner is in trouble again, after one of her dogs bit a woman jogging on Depot Street Wednesday.
Jennifer Mathers, 19, of Wilton was first charged with keeping a dangerous dog in late July and early August, when her Labrador-mix Moxie bit three people – two of them while she was under quarantine.
Moxie was euthanized on Aug. 2.
But this Wednesday, a jogger was bitten on the buttocks and the leg by another one of Mathers’ dogs, officials said. The victim and the lone witness said Bandit, a one year-old Shepherd-mix, ran across Depot Street and attacked the jogger, Animal Control Officer Wayne Atwood said Wednesday. The incident happened around 10:30 a.m., on Depot Street.
Mathers is expected in court this week on charges from the previous case, Atwood said. Wednesday afternoon, he was in the process of getting statements from the victim, an eye witness, and the victim’s doctor. He plans to summons Mathers on charges of keeping a dangerous dog, and having a dog at large.
“At this point it’s up to the court,” Wilton Officer Kevin McCutcheon said Wednesday. “The judge can bar someone from having a dog ever again.”
Allowing a dog to bite people – which endangers dogs, who are at risk of being euthanized, as well as humans, is irresponsible, McCutcheon said. “It’s not the dog’s fault, it’s her fault,” he said.
Atwood agreed. “I don’t think she’s a responsible dog owner,” he said. “Too many people getting bit too many times.”
Mathers could not immediately be located for a comment.
