RUMFORD – Phillip Joseph Robert Doiron, also known as Robert Philip Doiron, 77, retired Rumford educator, passed away Saturday, Sept. 23.
Son of the late George and Ida Blanchette Doiron, he was born, raised and educated in Livermore Falls, graduating from the local high school.
He continued his education at Farmington State Teachers College, now known as the University of Maine at Farmington, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1952. In 1955 he earned a master’s degree in education and administration from the University of Maine in Orono.
His educational career began in Blue Hill, followed by his joining the Rumford school system in 1957. There he served in the positions of teacher, principal, guidance counselor, elementary supervisor and assistant to the superintendent. He retired in 1983.
A Korean War veteran, he served with the 279th Regiment of the 45th Infantry Division, 2nd Battalion Military Intelligence and S-3 Division Headquarters. He achieved the rank of Sergeant 1st Class.
In 1953, he married Elizabeth Hogan at St. Francis Xavier Church in Brownville Junction. After living in Howland, Blue Hill and Dixfield, the couple made their permanent home in Rumford in 1967.
A skilled craftsman, Robert filled his retirement years making furniture, lamps, clocks, and various decorative items. Oil painting was another of his creative hobbies.
He was a communicant of St. Athanasius & St. John Catholic Church.
Besides his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Doiron, survivors include a son, Robert Jr. and wife, Patricia, of Saco; a daughter, Barbara Mamoulides and husband, James, of Raleigh N.C.; three grandchildren, Christopher Doiron, Kathryn Doiron and Daphne Mamoulides; a sister, Rita Cameron of Sabastian Fla.; a brother, Edward and his wife, Patricia, of Jay; and several nieces and nephews.
