This is regarding the letter to the editor on Sept. 21 from Roger Knowlton of Poland.

In reference to Poland’s tax increase of 8.7 percent, four selectmen voted for the increase, one against. I voted against it, largely because not a single attempt was made to curb spending in our current budget.

Also, the “solution” for repayment to Poland Spring Bottling resulted in a marked dollar value loss in TIF monies to be used for future economic development.

I will vote for controlled spending in November. An important part of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights is if our local government wants to increase spending, the citizens will make the decision.

We need to live within our means and set an example for our children. At the current pace of “tax and spend,” and the “live now, pay later” mentality, we are adversely affecting their futures.

Wendy Sanborn, Poland selectman
