Jonathan Bernier was back to his show-stopping self, captain Marc-Andre Cliche pulled out the game-winning goal in the third period and the Lewiston Maineiacs bounced back from a disappointing loss Sunday with a tough road win in Quebec on Tuesday night.

Cliche flipped the puck past Remparts’ goaltender Loic Lacasse at 6:45 of the third period, and Bernier made several outstanding saves with less than a minute to play, including one with his glove hand from his back on Quebec forward Brent Aubin, as the Maineiacs defeated the Remparts 3-2 at the Colisee Pepsi.

“This was good, especially because of the way we played the whole game,” said Maineiacs’ head coach Clem Jodoin. “They scored early on a 5-on-3, but after that, we played very well, very, very well.”

The win also marked a pair of milestones for one of the newest Lewiston skaters. Simon Courcelles, who was the captain last year for Quebec when it won the Memorial Cup, recorded his 100th career assist in front of the fans for whom he had played for three years.

“It was a good moment for him,” said Jodoin. “He was happy, too, to see his old teammates, and to win over them.”

It was an assist from Pierre-Luc Faubert, though, and Cliche’s finish on that play, that provided the bigger drama late in the game. Bernier sealed the win with his stellar play down the stretch.

“Jo is Jo,” said Jodoin of his netminder. “He’s not the same goalie as when we drafted him two years ago. His confidence is high, and he is so big in the net right now, and he is reacting in the proper way.”

Stefano Giliati showed his knack for short-handed scoring. Just 5:17 into the game, Giliati took a long feed from Courcelles and broke in alone on Lacasse. He faked left, moved right and roofed the puck over Lacasse’s shoulder to put Lewiston ahead 1-0.

“That’s his trademark,” Jodoin said. “He has speed, he uses that to his advantage.”

The Remparts capitalized on their next chance on the power play, this time enjoying extended time on a 5-on-3. At 9:23, Aubin tipped home a shot from the Remparts’ newest player, Billy Bezeau, through a screen to even the score at one.

Bezeau, a 20-year-old defenseman, was acquired via trade from Victoriaville less than a week ago.

Cliche made it 2-1 for Lewiston late in the second period on the team’s third chance with an extra skater, taking a feed from Courcelles at the goal line, skating to the net and wrapping the puck around Lacasse, banking it off the far post.

Lewiston plays its second game in as many nights tonight against Drummondville at the Centre Marcel Dionne, and will finish its road trip in Chicoutimi and Baie-Comeau on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Maineiacs open up at home Friday, Oct. 6, against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
