LEWISTON – A man was seriously injured when he was thrown from his motorcycle on Randall Road about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A witness said the man was driving toward Sabattus Street when he lost control of his bike and rolled several times before coming to rest on the pavement.

Police said the man suffered head and other injuries in the accident. His identity was not immediately available.

A woman driving home from work was credited with flagging down other drivers and getting them to stop as the victim lay in the road. One vehicle reportedly stopped 20 feet from the injured man.

Police said Karen Robitaille also ran to a nearby house and alerted a neighbor, who turned out to be the emergency room director at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

Robitaille said she was driving toward Pond Road when she saw the motorcycle headlights in the trees over the road.

“Then I saw the motorcycle tumbling down the hill. He just flew off it and rolled,” Robitaille said.

She then stopped another driver from continuing in his car over the spot where the injured man lay in the road.

“Then I ran to this house and said, ‘Hey, I need help.'”

Inside the house was Anita Lalond of St. Mary’s, who rushed outside in a robe and slippers. She said Robitaille did the right thing by not moving the injured man and by halting traffic around him.

“She got the traffic stopped, and we just protected him as well as we could,” Lalond said.

The motorcycle crashed near 219 Pond Road.

Lewiston police remained at the scene after midnight, reconstructing the crash. A long stretch of Randall Road remained closed to traffic as the investigation got under way.

It was believed the victim was taken to Central Maine Medical Center.

“He was unconscious for a while, but he regained consciousness as he was being treated,” said police Sgt. Marc Robitaille, a distant relation to Karen Robitaille.

He did not immediately know if the man had been wearing a helmet when he crashed.
