RUMFORD – Convicted felon Michel Violette was arrested Tuesday afternoon on South Rumford Road on probation violations that included possession of two rifles, a pistol and a machete.

He was taken to Oxford County jail where he was placed on a probation hold with no bail. As of Wednesday afternoon, he had not been charged.

Rumford police Sgt. Daniel Garbarini said three police officers and a probation officer arrested Violette at 12:30 p.m. after a routine search called for under the probation conditions, which bans a felon from owning firearms.

Because of the original charges stemming from January, Garbarini said more than one officer was sent to the home.

Violette, 57, was convicted earlier this year of terrorizing and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, both felonies. He served 21 days of a five-year sentence at Oxford County jail.

He’s legally a resident of Waterville, Garbarini said.

He said Violette had been staying with his family on South Rumford Road for the past two weeks.

The original charges assert that Violette held his wife and children hostage with a shotgun for three days.

Garbarini said the department is trying to determine whether to charge Violette under state or federal law. He is expected to be arraigned within a week.

“What makes this case important is the recent felony conviction involving firearms. He was out of jail less than a month, and here he is with a new case and new charges,” Garbarini said.

Violette was taken into custody without resistance. His wife and two of his children were present, Garbarini said.
