Class luncheon

RUMFORD – The Stephens High School Class of 1952 will meet at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at Teena’s for luncheon. Members planning to attend should call or e-mail Barbara in order that reservations may be made.

Legion meeting

RUMFORD – American Legion Post 24 and Auxiliary will meet Sunday, Oct. 1, at the post home on Congress Street. Lunch will be served at 5 p.m. with meetings to follow.

Jake’s Day

DIXFIELD – The Mountain Valley Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will hold the third annual Jake’s Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at Webb River Valley Sportsman’s Club off Canton Point Road.

The event is for children age 17 and under, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Jake’s Day is free for the children and includes their lunch.

The day consists of games as well as a learning experience. The children will have a chance to learn basic shotgun and archery and have other outdoor activities. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day and a grand prize will be presented at the end of the day.

Blood drive

RUMFORD – Rumford Hospital and the Rumford Area Rotary will sponsor a Red Cross blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Rumford American Legion. The hours have been extended until 6 p.m. to accommodate people who work. There is an urgent need for blood. Donors should call 369-1000 to sign up for an appointment.

Club to meet

ROXBURY – The Slippery Sliders Snowmobile Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Roxbury Fire Station.

Library events

MEXICO – Preschool Story and Craft Hour at the Mexico Public Library for children ages 2 to 5 will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3. It will include the reading of the following stories: “Up in the Tree” by Margaret Atwood; “Visiting Aunt Sylvia’s: A Maine Adventure” by Heather Austin; “Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf” by Lois Ehlert; “Fall is Here!” by Jane Belk Moncure; and “Ruby’s Beauty Shop” by Rosemary Wells. The craft for the day will include making “trees.”

Harvest supper

PERU – Families in Crisis Task Force will hold a harvest supper from 5 p.m. until sold out on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Rockemeka Grange Hall. Proceeds will help the task force purchase oil this winter. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for ages 12 and under. Anyone who would like to donate vegetables for the meal is asked to contact Rod Jamison at 562-8799.

Cemetery cleanup

PERU – The Demerritt Cemetery Association is preparing for the fall clean-up and is asking lot owners to remove all ornamentals, artificial plant arrangements and containers before Sunday, Oct. 8.

Work has been done on some of the roads, and a new sign has been erected. Much work was done last summer by owners trimming ornamental trees and bushes. Anyone who has not received an association newsletter but would like one should contact Vera at the town office and Shirley Dolloff at 562-7141.

Bridge play

RUMFORD – The last game of the season for the Rumford Duplicate Bridge Club was held Sept. 21. The winners were: first, Anna Cormier and Tom Rowe; second, Lil Irish and Jutta Thibodeau; third, Ann McClusky and Judy Roy; fourth, Deb Cohen and Deb Stewart.

Identity theft

RUMFORD – Maine Attorney General Steve Rowe will present informational sessions on identity theft at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Rumford Library meeting room.

Rowe will explain what identity theft is, how it can be prevented and what to do if it occurs. Rowe will also discuss other types of fraudulent schemes, with particular emphasis on those targeting the elderly.

Rowe is presenting the forums at the request of the Oxford County Democratic Committee. The forums are open to the public.

Exercise class

MEXICO – Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice will start the fall session of “Moving Freely,” an exercise class for senior citizens, on Monday, Oct. 9.

The six-week program will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Mexico Rec Center. Instructor will be Louise Stickney. Preregister by calling 1-800-482-7412, ext. 1404.
