WILTON – Two Ski-Doo snowmobiles were reported missing Tuesday by a Weld Road resident, police Chief Wayne Gallant said Wednesday.

The machines were being kept in a seldom-used storage garage on the owner’s property and were discovered missing Tuesday, Gallant said. Police aren’t sure exactly when they were stolen.

Together, the snowmobiles have a combined value of about $7,000, with the smaller of the two worth nearly $2,000 and the newer, larger one worth about $5,000. The property was vacant at the time of the theft, he said, and there was no sign of forced entry.

“It’s not unusual to have anything stolen these days,” Gallant said when asked if that type of theft was unusual at this time of year. “It’s not unusual for thieves to travel the country roads and look for items that are valuable or marketable – lawn mowers, generators even snowmobiles,” he said.

“It wouldn’t take long to load a couple of snowmobiles into the back of a pickup truck.”

At this time of year, it’s also not unusual to see folks driving down the road with snow machines in the back of their trucks, taking them to get serviced, Gallant said. Still, police are hoping somebody remembers seeing the two machines being moved. One is a small yellow Mini Z and the other is a purple Formula Z, according to the police report.
