AUBURN – After Rachel Siegfriedt scored to tie the game Thursday, the Edward Little girls’ soccer team knew it could not let the junior midfielder from Erskine score again.
The Red Eddies achieved that goal, but Siegfriedt still found a way to burn the Red Eddies. Her cross for Arian Kumlangngam was converted into the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over EL.
Siegfriedt, an all-conference player last season, won the ball and put a low shot toward the goal. Kumlangngam was there to steer it home with 16:16 left in the game.
“It was a really good cross from Rachel in front of the goal,” said Kumlangngam, a sophomore forward. “I thought it was going in. I was there to finish it off.”
Though EL had produced a strong first half and took a 1-0 lead on an Alyssa Levesque goal, the Red Eddies (5-5) couldn’t maintain that.
“The second half we were complacent again,” said EL coach Val Brown. “We were missing marks in the back. We were against the wind. So we weren’t going to the ball and receiving and possessing. We didn’t possess nearly as well as we did in the first half.”
Levesque, who had just entered the game, scored with 11:57 left in the half. Kirsten Prue crossed a pass from the right corner. Levesque was in front to redirect it.
“The first half we probably possessed the best we have all season,” said Brown, whose club outshot Erskine 5-3 in the first half. “Our marks were there. We weren’t communicating as well as I would have liked to have seen, but we played a solid first half. We scored first. We came out and had that focus we haven’t had coming into games. I was very, very happy with the first half.”
EL’s defensive play couldn’t keep Erskine at bay. The Eagles moved the ball well up front and picked up the attack after falling behind. Siegfriedt tied the game when she ripped a hard shot to the top of the net with 7:55 left.
“I think it really motivated us,” said Kumlangngam, whose team was coming off a 1-0 loss against Morse. “It got us started and showed us what we needed to do.”
Erskine (8-2) outshot EL 10-2 in the second half and produced numerous chances before getting the game-winner. Siegfriedt had a nice bid on a turn-around shot, and Jessica St. Amand burst by the defense for a low shot that Brittney French stopped with a diving save. Siegfriedt redirected a pass by Erin Corey that French also stopped. EL’s only threat in the second half came when Alice Read had an indirect kick at the top of the penalty area, but her shot went wide.
“It was like they scored and the wind came out of our sails,” said Brown, who shuffled the attack up front to spark some offense down the stretch. “We just couldn’t get the ball there and couldn’t get it out of the midfield. We had some beautiful attacks in the first half, and we just couldn’t get them in the second half.”
