Veterans putting around at home

PARIS – Residents at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris are just “putting” around on the new three-hole putting green.

The putting green became a reality after discussion during a Resident Council meeting. Several residents brought up the subject of having a putting green after going out on several golfing expeditions with the residential care unit activities assistant, Peter Kilgore.

The residents knew there were others at the home who would like to play but weren’t able to get out to a course as easily.

On their own time, maintenance workers Mo Morrisette, Paul Davis and Larry Austin designed and built a three-hole putting green, measuring 20 by 24 feet. It is walker and wheelchair accessible.

Donations from the OakDale Country Club in Rumford and Charlie McAllister, a resident in the community, for the cups and flags helped to complete the project.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Sept. 12 at the facility. Refreshments were served to residents and guests while golfers practiced their putting techniques.
