FALMOUTH – There was only so far St. Dom’s could bend before Falmouth finally broke through.
The Yachtsmen, behind a goal and two stellar assists from Jordan Hale, scored two late in the first half and added a third toward the end in the second to upend the previously once-beaten Saints 3-0 in boys’ soccer Thursday.
“The key was just patience and persistence,” said Falmouth coach David Halligan. “They’re a good team, a hard-nosed team, and they work hard. We needed to have patience and do the little things right to win this game.”
Hale scored the first Falmouth goal on a set kick from just outside the box in the 28th minute, a kick set up perfectly when two Falmouth forwards snuck into the middle of the St. Dom’s wall and opened up just as Hale struck the low, screaming kick.
“They had a lot of guys on the right side, hoping I would hit it with my right foot,” said Hale. “I tried to put the ball right through the wall, and nobody from their team got in the way. They were watching our guys on the wall and not the ball.”
The ball did catch one of the St. Dom’s defenders in the leg, which threw netminder Austin Fuller off just enough to allow the ball to slip past him.
“We’ve been down before, and we’ve been able to get back into games,” said St. Dom’s coach Lee Hixon. “Nobody likes to give up a goal, especially on a dead ball situation 20 yards out, but the kids are pretty resilient.”
Less than six minutes later, Hale took a feed at midfield from fellow senior Jesse Hugo. he streaked up the right side of the field and put himself at an awkward angle to shoot. At the last second, he crossed the ball hard to the middle and found Hugo in the middle.
“He knows where I am,” said Hugo, pointing at Hale. “I played it back, he got the ball and curled up the wing. I curled around to get out of his way because he can fire from anywhere, and I ended up behind the defense but onside. He played a hard ball on the ground, and I just redirected it in.”
Fuller kept the Saints (5-2-3) in the game for a while longer from there. The busy keeper stopped 15 Falmouth shots and watched as another 15 missed the cage wide and high.
“He’s a phenomenal goalie,” said Hixon.
The Yachtsmen (7-1-1) continued to pressure St. Dom’s in the second half, and with less than five minutes to play, they knocked in a third goal, again on a long feed from Hale on the right side.
