FARMINGTON – Gertrude Jane (Derrick) Mann, 94, formerly of Bangor, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center, where she had been residing for several years.

She was born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1912, the daughter of Andrew and Edith (Tapp) Derrick. She left home at 18 for Ottawa, Ontario. There she lived with her older sister, working days and attending business school at night, and eventually holding retail sales positions in higher-end stores.

During World War II, this resulted in her coming into regular contact with many notable European families and royals sent to the safety of Canada for the duration of the war. She fitted Princess Juliana of the Netherlands for the dress she wore to the baptism of her new baby, Beatrix, the present day queen of The Netherlands.

She married returning war veteran Neville W. Mann of New Brunswick, Canada, in 1947. They began their life together, became American citizens and followed Neville’s work across the Northeastern U.S. and Canada. They settled in Bangor in 1958, and for many years enjoyed summers with family at a cottage they built on Phillips Lake.

She is survived by son, James and his wife, Donna, of New Sharon; daughter, Genevieve Baum and her husband, Bruce, of New Jersey; granddaughters, Tessa Mann of Saco, Kelly Baum, Maxine Robertelli, and her husband, Rob, of New Jersey; great-grandson, Roberto Mario Robertelli of New Jersey; her sister, Irene of Quebec; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Neville, in 2000; three sisters; and four brothers.
