AUBURN – Soon the new elementary school in Auburn will have a name.
Auburn voters and students of the school will vote on the name Nov. 14, Principal Vickie Gaylord said Friday.
Voting will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. for students of the K-6 school, and for Auburn registered voters. Voting will be at the Park Avenue school, Gaylord said.
Some of the city’s voting booths will be moved to the school for the day. City Clerk Mary Lou Magno will oversee the name-that-school election, Gaylord said.
Auburn residents and students are being asked to decide the name because “we want the public to be part of this,” Gaylord said.
Students will also have an additional role.
Before the election, students will take part in a convention to determine the final list of names. Gaylord estimated between three to five names will make the ballot.
Before the convention, teachers will teach students history of area old schools, Webster and Lake Street, and the community. “We want history to be a part of this,” Gaylord said. During the convention, students in all grades will learn about the political process, she said.
The list of possible names will be chosen according to Auburn School Committee policy, which will rule out silly ones like SpongeBob SquarePants or Southpark.
On Friday, a committee was working to finalize other details. The Auburn School Committee has the final say in the chosen name.
