This is in response to Laurie Hearne’s letter on Sept. 26 regarding an Auburn Mall store that carries adult material. I would like to mention that the Auburn Mall is not a baby sitting service. It is a place of commerce.

Malls are collections of small stores that help each other become more successful by complementing each other through selection and competition. For decades, parents have “dropped” kids off at the mall, some as young as 7, to “hang” with friends. The mall is not an amusement park.

Parents who don’t want their children viewing material that might be age-inappropriate need to remember they are responsible for what their child sees. If you are a parent, supervise your children. What they see, say and do should be monitored and coached by parents, not mall employees and security guards.

I worked at the mall for several years, and always felt strongly about this issue.

We don’t need new laws passed to censor what stores sell. We don’t need government to shut down anybody. We simply need parents to act like parents, and take responsibility for their kids, instead of foisting them off on people with a full plate at their mall jobs.

If kids are misbehaving in stores and endangering themselves or others, and parents don’t take responsibility to say anything about it, then parents should please hold their temper when mall employees have to do the job instead.
