LIVERMORE – A ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at the restored Hathaway Cemetery, Hathaway Hill Road.
The small family cemetery had been neglected for many years until Sept. 16, when local Boy Scout Troop 199 devoted a day to cutting brush and trees, hauling brush, raking leaves and dead twigs, putting up a new electric fence, piling the stones back on the wall and trying to piece together three of six cemetery stones.
Troop members will be on hand during the ceremony to explain their community service project. Julie Mudry and family of Fort Worth, Texas, descendants of the Hathaways, will be present. The local VFW Color Guard will present the colors during a brief graveside service.
Everyone is invited to the cemetery, located adjacent to the Hathaway Hill Road at the Roland St. Pierre farm. Bring a lawn chair.
In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at 10 a.m. at the North Livermore Baptist Church.
Following the public ceremony, lunch will be served downstairs at the North Livermore Baptist Church. “Before” and “during” photos of the cemetery will be on display. The story of David Hinds, Civil War soldier who died in Salisbury Prison, will be shared. .
Hathaway family members in the cemetery include Gilbert Hathaway and wife, Mary Evans Hathaway, Bailey Hathaway and wife, Deborah (Haines) Hathaway, Sarah (Hathaway) Ladd and Deborah Hathaway, young child who died at 14 months.
Gilbert and son, Bailey, were members of the Livermore Militia during the War of 1812, helping to guard Portland in 1814. A small American flag will be placed at each cemetery stone to remember their service to the country.
The graveside ceremony is being sponsored by the Livermore Cemetery Committee as part of its ongoing effort to identify neglected cemeteries in town and enlist help to make them an acceptable and honorable place to visit.
