Isadore Simard of 31 Pulsifer street, is remodeling his block on Third street into an eight tenement house. An addition is being built on to the back end and it is understood that the building is to be raised two stories. New Auburn is, to use a resident’s words “the only live place in the two cities just now.” Improvement seems to be the watchword of the hour. Max Miller is building a fine stable on Pulisfer Street. The Reny block is fast nearing completion and several buildings are being repaired. The city commission is also infected and the ledge on Broad Street is being blasted for the purpose of widening the street.

50 Years Ago, 1956

• The Defense Department today disclosed the first flight of a new two-stage rocket to an altitude of 80 miles – and a speed of 3,800 miles an hour – off the Virginia coast. The Defense Department cleared an announcement that the 15-foot-long, 225-pound vehicle, only 6¾ inches across at its widest point, was designed and built by the Guided Missiles Division of Republic Aviation Corp., Mineola, Long Island, N.Y.

• The Brooklyn Dodgers won the National League pennant today on the final day of the baseball season and will meet the New York Yankees in the World Series starting Wednesday.

25 Years Ago, 1981

NEW YORK – It was a welcome change for the nation’s bankers – people lined up to bring money in, not to take it away, as tax-free All Savers Certificates went on sale Thursday.

A spot check nationwide indicated many banks and thrift institutions were doing a brisk business, particularly in the South.

Certificates sold before Monday will carry a 12.61 percent interest rate. Minimum deposits are $500.

Banks and thrifts institutions planned to stay open late Friday, and in some cases scheduled weekend hours to give investors the opportunity to invest before rates change.
