CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A burglary suspect was shot twice by a police officer who killed him while investigating a burglary, an autopsy found.

Clyde Gauntt, 54, of Loudon, was shot Friday night when he confronted a police officer at his mother’s home, said Merrimack County Attorney Daniel St. Hilaire. Gauntt had a knife, St. Hilaire said.

One bullet hit Gauntt in the liver and right lung. The other hit him in the left lung, aorta, spine and collar bone, the autopsy found.

St. Hilaire said many officers are trained to shoot two rounds when confronted with a deadly threat, a practice known as “double-tapping.”

Gauntt had a history of mental illness, alcoholism and assaults against police and family members. He had been served with a no trespassing order for his mother’s home a day earlier.
