Science day

AUGUSTA – The Maine State Museum will host Earth Science Day, a statewide celebration highlighting the geology of Maine, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11.

A group consisting of geologist, environmental educators, artists and others will gather to explain the ways that earth products contribute to the economy, education and enjoyment. Admission will be free. For more information, call 287-2301 or visit www.mainestatemuseum.com.

Fort lectures

AUGUSTA – Old Fort Western, the 1754 National Landmark fort, store and house historic site on the riverfront in downtown Augusta, will host two talks during October.

On Thursday, Oct. 5, fort interpreter Judy Sample will talk about “Beating the Heat in 18th-Century Maine.” Her lecture will be drawn from the series of Sunday demonstrations she researched and presented last summer.

Then on Thursday, Oct. 26, David Richards, author of “Poland Spring: A Tale of the Gilded Age, 1860-1900,” a history of the Poland Spring Resort, will talk about “The Rise of Spas in the 19th Century.”

Both talks will take place at 7 p.m. in the fort’s Learning Gallery at City Hall, 16 Cony St. Admission is free. Donations in support of educational programming at Old Fort Western are suggested. Go to www.oldfortwestern.org or call 626-2385 for more information.

Wolves program

FALMOUTH – The Maine Audubon will host programs with live gray wolves from 4 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Gilsland Farm Audubon Center.

Participants will learn from Montana biologists about wolf myths, folklore and facts such as behavior, habitat and restoration efforts.

The first program is suggested for families with children ages 8 and younger. The second program is suggested for families with children ages 9 and up. Each program is $10/adult, $5/child for Maine Audubon members or $12/adult, $6/child for nonmembers.

Nominations

BATH – Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance is seeking nominations for the second annual Maine Literary Awards. Deadline for nominations is Dec. 15. All Maine writers and Maine-based publishers are encouraged to submit nominations.

Awards will be given in seven book categories, and unpublished work will be honored, to include a stage-writing and youth/high school category. Winners will be honored at a public ceremony on April 5.

Greyhound clinic

AUGUSTA – The Maine Greyhound Placement Service Adoption Center, 249 Old Belgrade Road, will hold groundbreaking at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, for the veterinary clinic at the center.

The clinic will help support the service by economically meeting the medical needs of greyhounds being offered for adoption in Augusta and by offering low cost medical care to greyhounds from adoption groups located up and down the east coast.

It will also be an opportunity to learn about the 14-year story of the placement service and to meet greyhounds and their owners. Contact Louise Sawyer or Scott Bruns at 626-2893 for more information.
