JAY – A Jay man was injured Saturday night after he lost control of his motorcycle on a newly paved section of Route 4 in North Jay.
David Cook, 48, was traveling south on his 2004 Harley-Davidson bike with two other motorcyclists near Autobahn when the bike went off the pavement, Jay police officer Richard Caton IV said Monday.
There is about an 8-inch drop from the pavement to the shoulder. The motorcycle’s foot-peg and frame were scraping the edge of the pavement, Caton said, and the bike traveled down the edge of the pavement about 135 feet on its left side.
Cook came to a driveway and ended being thrown from his motorcycle and the bike crashed, Caton said.
The bike being on the edge of the pavement prevented Cook from keeping the bike balanced and he lost control, Caton said.
The newly paved area of road has no solid white lines painted on it yet to indicate where the driving lane and breakdown lanes change.
Cook was wearing a helmet, Caton said.
He suffered a cut to the head and complained of internal pain, the officer said.
A NorthStar Emergency Medical ambulance took Cook to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington before he was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
A spokesman at the Lewiston hospital said Monday that Cook was no longer a patient there.
Caton said the accident remains under investigation.
He estimated the bike received $1,500 in damage.
