TURNER – SAD 52 River Valley Adult and Community Education of Greene, Leeds and Turner has a wide variety of classes starting this month.

Babysitter training is a seven-week class for students ages 11 to 15. It provides skills necessary to provide care to suddenly ill or injured children until more advanced medical personnel arrive. Students will receive hands-on practice in holding, feeding and changing infants, along with decision-making activities.

American Red Cross CPR and first aid will be held in three sessions. The handgun safety personal protection plan is a three-week class, and students must be 18 to participate. The above classes start on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

Participants will learn to weave a basket in a four-week class beginning Wednesday, Oct. 4. In a one-night class Oct. 4 participants will take a small block of wood and turn it into a dressed doll.

A reptiles and amphibians workshop will return for kindergarten through grade four on Saturday, Oct. 7. There will be slide shows, videos and hands-on experience.

Learn Microsoft Office 2000 in a nine-week class, starting Tuesday, Oct. 10, that will cover introductory concepts and techniques. Attendees will learn word processing skills, how to create a simple spreadsheet and how to wow an audience with a presentation.

The second driver education class for the semester will commence Wednesday, Oct. 11, with 30 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of driving.

Planning for retirement will be the topic at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Adult Learning Complex.

“Young Scientists: Fossils” is a two-week class beginning Saturday, Oct. 21, for ages 7 through 12. Using clay molds and plaster, students will create their “fossil,” evidence of prehistoric sea life.

American Red Cross CPR/AED for the professional rescuer is a two-week class beginning Monday, Oct. 23. The course will provide knowledge and skills more advanced than that of lay responders that may be necessary to provide lifesaving care to persons who become suddenly ill or injured.

A one-night class on Monday, Oct. 23, is titled “Quickbreads.” A little background and history of quickbreads will be shared. Start making pumpkin, zucchini, lemon and nut breads for the holidays.
