FRYEBURG -A flight from police ended in arrest for a young Fryeburg man late Monday night.
Corey H. Hicks, 20, of 57 Pine St., was charged with unlawful trafficking of marijuana, eluding an officer, operating under the influence and driving to endanger, according to police records. He was booked at the Oxford County Jail at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday and later released on $1,000 bail.
Sgt. Timothy Ontengco of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said he was traveling southbound on Route 113 at about 9:30 p.m. Monday when he was nearly hit by a speeding Jeep Grand Cherokee that crossed into his lane.
“I had to take evasive action to avoid being hit head-on,” Ontengco said.
When he turned his cruiser around to pursue the vehicle, Ontengco said the driver refused to stop. The chase lasted about five minutes, when Ontengco said he lost sight of the SUV.
Other officers, in town for the Fryeburg Fair, later located Hicks turning onto Woods Road, a trail accessible only by four-wheel-drive trucks and ATVs. Ontengco and Deputy Joshua Wyman pursued Hicks on foot.
Police found the SUV abandoned in the woods and called for Trooper Adam Fillebrown, a State Police K-9 officer, who located Hicks in the area where the SUV was abandoned.
While searching the SUV for registration papers, police uncovered about one ounce of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia, Ontengco said, adding that from the way the marijuana was cut, police judged that Hicks had an intent to sell.
