JAY – A 14-year-old boy’s truancy from school didn’t last long after police called in a K-9 unit to find him.
A parent called police to report a child missing about three hours after he said he wasn’t going to school, police Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier said Wednesday.
The boy didn’t make it to the bus or the school, he said.
Fournier said he went into the woods to look for the boy and couldn’t locate him.
He talked to Franklin County Sheriff Department deputies and requested a K-9 unit, he said.
Deputy David Rackliffe and his tracking dog, Odin, came from Weld to search for the boy and found him, he said.
The teenager was released to his parent’s custody.
Fournier said there was a 3-hour time span between when the boy missed the bus and when Rackliffe and Odin arrived.
Fournier said he recommends that parents call police as soon as possible if they have a missing child.
He also advises them to try not to contaminate the site by doing too much moving around where they suspect the child may have gone until police can investigate.
The parent of the missing boy had gone into the woods to look for the boy and couldn’t find him before he arrived, he said.
“We think back and we have one missing child in Jay,” he said, referring to Kim Moreau, 17, who has been missing for 20 years. “We don’t overlook these types of things. We try to get out there as soon as possible.”
