I read your front-page story about the new Prospect Narrows Bridge and the demise of the Sail Inn Restaurant (Sept. 25) with interest, as the restaurant was always a stopping point for travels to Down East and Eastern Maine. Now, it sits dormant next to the approach to the new bridge.

The article briefly states the current predicament and starts a history of the restaurant, but ends abruptly with a statement about a moving day in the late 1960s due to a highway improvement.

I thought this was an odd way of ending an article, and the author had dropped the ball in writing a complete piece. Nevertheless, I e-mailed some friends about the article, soon getting back an e-mail of the article on your Web site. Upon reading it, I found the current “meat” of the dispute between the owners of the Sail Inn and the Maine Department of Transportation was omitted from the paper.

Surely, a complete article for your readers would better enlighten them about the vacant eatery and the family’s plight. In my opinion, the state only needed a temporary parking/storage lot.

The new approach to the bridge actually gives the restaurant a potentially greater and safer parking area than the old bridge and its approach. I am sure entrances could be worked out, and we could still have a stopping off point on the way to, and from, Eastern Maine!
