DIXFIELD – Selectmen met in special session Thursday morning to set the procedures for replacing former board Chairman Tony Carter, who resigned earlier this week.

People interested in running for the remaining seven months of Carter’s term may pick up nomination papers at the Dixfield Town Office beginning Friday, Oct. 6. At least 25 and no more than 75 signatures of Dixfield residents are needed.

Nomination papers must be turned in to the town office no later than 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24. A new selectman will be chosen during the Nov. 7 general election.

That person will serve until municipal elections in June 2007.

Vice Chairwoman Bettina Martin said the board will elect a chairman at the selectmen’s meeting Oct. 9. If she is chosen as chairman, then a new vice chairman must also be elected.

Carter, who is active in the River Valley Growth Council and River Valley Technology Center, resigned to take a job with NewPage Corp. in Luke, Md.

“He’s done a lot of work in the area,” Martin said. “We will miss him.”
