ROCKLAND (AP) – A 108-foot fishing vessel that was badly damaged in a nighttime collision with an 891-foot oil tanker more than 20 miles southeast of Portland Head Light has made it back to its dock under its own power.
One person on the trawler Sunlight suffered minor injuries in the Wednesday night accident in the northern outbound shipping lane, said Coast Guard Lt. Connie Braesch.
The tanker Erik Spirit, built last year in South Korea, had just left Portland after off-loading crude oil, Braesch said.
Because the incident is under investigation, the Coast Guard could offer few details, including the number of people aboard each ship. Braesch could not say which vessel struck the other, noting that, “The navigation rules will help define that.”
A vessel from Coast Guard Station Boothbay Harbor escorted the Sunlight back to Rockland on Thursday. The extent of damage, if any, to the tanker was unknown.
